Dear Parents/Carers, WESTFIELD SUMMER FAYRE A big thank you to the hundreds of parents and carers who came to the Summer Fayre last Friday evening. Through your generosity and the hard work of our staff, Westfield Junior School raised £1,862 in total for our school PTA funds!! This money will all go to our children to fund lots of different activities and subsidise some others. Mrs Elwell, as you know, organises the Summer Fayre every year and that is a whole heap of extra work for her. Lots of other staff helped out also – too many to mention by name but I would like to say thank you so much to Ms Mary Coughlan for raising a brilliant £280 on her stall alone. It was good to see so many of you there... DANCE PERFORMANCES Yesterday, we had dance performances from 5HW and 6C on the theme of ‘Scream Machine’ (which is the year 5 and 6 topic this half term) and from 3F and 4KC who danced to Showaddywaddy and Englebert Humperdinck as part of their topic ‘Urban Pioneers’ – both artists were Leicester based apparently. I was so proud of our pupils who danced so well and looked as if they were enjoying themselves. Erika, our dance teacher, is amazing and you can see the improvement year on year. We do like to make sure that the curriculum includes the creative subjects like dance, music, drama performing arts as well as the basics such as maths and English. TRANSFER DAY Next Thursday (5th July) we have transfer day for our year 3, 4 and 5 pupils in school and we welcome our new year 3 pupils from the infant school. They will find out who their new teacher will be on Wednesday at the end of the school day. Our year 6 pupils go off to their high schools (we have children going to five different high schools) for two days and come back to us for their last week at Westfield Junior School. This year, the high schools are having fabulous children as year 6 pupils have been well behaved and hard-working this year. Again, next week looks hot and sunny. Could you send your child with a hat, a drink and sun screen please? Also, we cannot put sunscreen on your children as has been requested so you need to make sure it is applied at home. Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, YEAR 2 TRANSITION This week and over the next couple of weeks, the year two pupils at WIS will be visiting our school to meet staff and familiarise themselves with the building layout. We always think of our year three pupils as our small children but realise when we see the year two pupils that our year threes are not so small – they look very grown up compared to the infant pupils! We have also had a family breakfast for our new year two parents/carers and we had a great turn out. Next Tuesday evening we will have a chance to meet parents and carers and welcome them to our school. Year three staff also spend time at WIS and vice versa to ensure a smooth transition. SPORTS’ DAY We had a brilliant Sports’ Day on Wednesday! Thank you to all the parents/carers who realised that, as the site was open, we had to try to ensure our children’s safety and that was why we had the yellow tape in place. Our children were amazing – they ran, jumped, skipped and sprinted in good humour and sportsmanship and even though it rained towards the end, spirits were high. I would like to thank especially, Mr Farrell, Mr Woodward and Mr Lambert, who organised the event so well. Photos should be on the website for you to look at. 4SF CLASS ASSEMBLY Today, 4SF were able to perform their class assembly at last. Thank you to Mrs Wright for stepping in to make sure it went well. It was a brilliant assembly even though there has not been a lot of time to rehearse. 4SF as a class are a credit to their parents/carers and the school as they are true Westfield Junior School pupils – they get on with things, are a great team and work hard. We are very proud of them... SUMMER FAYRE It’s that time of year again when we have our Westfield Community Summer Fayre over three sites. There’s lots to do and see, a great raffle, plenty of food to eat plus it is always lovely to see many of our ex-pupils coming back to our school with their families. Today the weather looks like wall-to-wall sunshine so hopefully, we will have lots of visitors! HOT WEATHER Just a quick reminder that next week is to be hot and that the children need to wear hats, sun screen and also have a drink. It is also important that children do not wear open toed sandals – too many hazards in school... Thank you! Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, CONDOVER HALL THANK YOU Our amazing year four pupils had a great time at Condover Hall and it was so good to see their tired but happy faces coming off the bus. I would like to thank our wonderful staff who went on the residential with our pupils: Mrs Ansell, Miss Brett, Mrs Halliday, Miss King, Mrs Knowles, Mrs Charity, Mr Winslade and Mrs Worthington. They told me that the behaviour of the children was excellent and the staff at Condover had said that our children were the best organised and behaved that they had seen! Again, Westfield Junior School pupils are having compliments when we are out of school. I love that! MRS CHENEY’S MARATHON! Last Sunday, our very own Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Cheney, ran the London Marathon in aid of the ‘Jeans for Genes’ charity which, as a school, we support annually. She finished in 6 hours and 25 minutes which was a very good time, considering that she had a broken leg last year and dislocated her toe last month! All in all, Mrs Cheney only had four months of training and we are all very proud of her determination and resilience. Today, we had our Jeans for Genes Day at school to support her great effort. She has spoken to the children in assembly today and has been showing of her medal of which she is justifiably proud!! PARENTS’ EVENING We are looking forward to seeing you all for Parents’ Evening the week after next. Year five teachers will be in the main school hall. Other staff will be in their classrooms. This is only for years three, four and five. 4SF Parents’ Evening will be held later on in the term. YEAR 4 BREAKFAST It was good to see so many parents and other family members attending our breakfast this morning! We hope you enjoyed your food and being able to spend time in school with your child. GOODIES’ TREAT This term, the Goodies’ Treat is on Monday 2nd July and is a theatre company (M&M Productions) who will be entertaining the children - there will be an ice cream too. You can’t we don’t offer great treats! Everyone is entitled to the Goodies’ Treat unless they are given a detention. Last term only 9 pupils missed out. Best wishes, Margaret Greig
