Dear Parents/Carers, CONDOVER HALL THANK YOU Our amazing year four pupils had a great time at Condover Hall and it was so good to see their tired but happy faces coming off the bus. I would like to thank our wonderful staff who went on the residential with our pupils: Mrs Ansell, Miss Brett, Mrs Halliday, Miss King, Mrs Knowles, Mrs Charity, Mr Winslade and Mrs Worthington. They told me that the behaviour of the children was excellent and the staff at Condover had said that our children were the best organised and behaved that they had seen! Again, Westfield Junior School pupils are having compliments when we are out of school. I love that! MRS CHENEY’S MARATHON! Last Sunday, our very own Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Cheney, ran the London Marathon in aid of the ‘Jeans for Genes’ charity which, as a school, we support annually. She finished in 6 hours and 25 minutes which was a very good time, considering that she had a broken leg last year and dislocated her toe last month! All in all, Mrs Cheney only had four months of training and we are all very proud of her determination and resilience. Today, we had our Jeans for Genes Day at school to support her great effort. She has spoken to the children in assembly today and has been showing of her medal of which she is justifiably proud!! PARENTS’ EVENING We are looking forward to seeing you all for Parents’ Evening the week after next. Year five teachers will be in the main school hall. Other staff will be in their classrooms. This is only for years three, four and five. 4SF Parents’ Evening will be held later on in the term. YEAR 4 BREAKFAST It was good to see so many parents and other family members attending our breakfast this morning! We hope you enjoyed your food and being able to spend time in school with your child. GOODIES’ TREAT This term, the Goodies’ Treat is on Monday 2nd July and is a theatre company (M&M Productions) who will be entertaining the children - there will be an ice cream too. You can’t we don’t offer great treats! Everyone is entitled to the Goodies’ Treat unless they are given a detention. Last term only 9 pupils missed out. Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, We have had a very busy but brilliant week this week! The children have had their end of term tests in maths, GPS and reading and have had their writing assessed by their class teachers. Everyone is looking forward to their Easter break! GOODIES’ TREAT This week all the children who did not have a detention had a brilliant Goodies’ Treat! Upper school, Years 5 and 6 went to the Hinckley Cinema on Tuesday to see Despicable Me 3 and yesterday lower school, Year 3 and 4 saw Moana. All children had a Munchbox with a drink, popcorn and chocolate/raisins and pupils were also given a free gift from Mr David Shreeve, the cinema manager, who used to be a pupil at our school (he was actually in my class when I taught here) – it’s not what you know but WHO you know that counts!! Many children said that they had a great experience and said thank you – again, our lovely, polite pupils who we are very proud of... Next term we have M and M productions coming in as the Goodies’ Treat near the end of term. ST JOHN’S CHURCH Today the whole school made their way down to Coventry Road to celebrate Easter in church. There are so many of us, we have had to split the school into lower and upper and have two services. Thank you to St John’s for hosting this for us. CONDOVER HALL MEETING Yesterday we held an information meeting for Year 4 parents and carers. The trip is going ahead on Wednesday 18th April to Friday 20th April. All parents/carers who attended took away the paperwork we need completing. Today all year 4 children will have that paperwork sent home so don’t worry if you have already completed it and given it to us. We need to send out to all parents/carers of pupils who are going to Condover Hall so we don’t miss anyone out. YEAR 6 PGL ISLE OF WIGHT 2019 A letter will be coming home today with a permission slip for the trip to PGL next year. Although it seems expensive at £450, we are away for five days and all the excursions plus the cost of the coach and the ferry as well as the activities at PGL and all meals and facilities are included. We still feel this is a good price. Have a Happy Easter (and lots of chocolate...) Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, SWIMMING GALA Last Saturday afternoon Westfield Junior School pupils competed in the Hinckley and Bosworth Swimming Gala. Mr Farrell, Mr Woodward and Mrs Worthington who all attended, said that out of the 16 schools taking part, the Westfield Swimming Team achieved fourth place (just missing third place). This is a huge achievement for us and we are really proud of our pupils. YEAR 5 DARWIN EXHIBITION This week our Year 5 pupils held a Darwin exhibition showing all the wonderful, creative items they had made as part of their homework projects. It was fantastic to see everyone’s hard work and visitors to the exhibition, including school Governors, thought that the standard of exhibits was high. Well done to Year 5! PTA CINEMA FILM NIGHT The PTA organised a film night this week on Wednesday – 120 children watched Paddington 2 and had a snack box. This was a trial run to see if it would be successful and it was! So, we will be doing it again early in the summer term. Letters will be coming home to let you know. Thank you to Mrs Elwell, Mrs Wright, Mrs Holt, Mrs Cheney, Mrs Chambers, Mrs Carsley and Mrs Smith-Phelps who helped organise this and supervise the children. DANCE PERFORMANCES Yesterday 3H, 4B, 5MK and 6L performed to the school and then to their parents/carers. I was not able to attend but had seen the dances in rehearsal. We hope you enjoyed watching you children dancing with confidence and enjoyment. YEAR 3 FAMILIES’ BREAKFAST Today, we held the first of our year group Families’ Breakfast with year 3 families coming in to have breakfast with their children. Thank you to the kitchen staff, Mr Stynes, Mrs Elwell, Mrs Cheney and Mrs Holt (yet again)! Plus, the year 3 staff who were able to join us. YEAR 6 PARENTS’ EVENING Next week, year 6 teachers will be holding Parent/Teacher meetings in the hall. We hope you are able to attend as this is an important meeting just before the SATs in May. I look forward to seeing you in school. Best wishes, Margaret

Dear Parents/Carers, I hope you were all able to read my letter sent out to you on Tuesday about the reasons we were closed on Friday and Monday. Hopefully, the LA will come out to lag our pipes before next winter! EXCITING ARTWORK PROJECT Next term, we have organised for an artist to come into school to work with all our pupils to create artwork for our school corridors. As you can see when you visit, the school corridors are huge and very long – difficult to make them more child-friendly - but we are going to try! Miss Haggie and Miss Brett will be organising an art exhibition when all classes have completed their artwork so that parents and carers can come in to see what we have done. The date will be set nearer the time. DANCE PERFORMANCES Next week, on Thursday four classes will be performing their dance routines to the school and then to their parents/carers. Times are as follows: 5MK and 6L at 10:30 then 3H and 4B pupils are performing at 2pm. Hopefully, you will be able to join us. We will start promptly at these times. VIDEO GAMES 18+ Recently, we have been seeing a few ‘games’ that the children have been playing in the playgrounds which have raised safeguarding concerns with us. This is really to remind parents/carers that children of primary school age should NOT be playing games such as Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto as they quite clearly state that they are for 18+. How do I know that the children are using these games? They tell me when I speak to them about their ‘play’. I know it is not easy in this digital age to monitor everything and being a parent/carer is not easy especially when children usually are more tech savvy than us but please, please check your children’s devices this weekend. If you are not sure how to do this, ask someone who can – our IT team will give you advice should you need it. 4B CLASS ASSEMBLY- OCEAN COMMOTION/ COFFEE STOP Today we had 4B’s class assembly which was wonderful with loads of amazing props (and pupils, of course)! I do have to say that I have been listening to rehearsals through the wall (my office is next to the hall) and I heard the ‘Jaws’ music which still has the power to raise a chill in me after all these years! Miss Brett would like to thank Mrs Halliday who has been a real help with the props and the assembly this week. Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, CROSS COUNTRY Last Saturday, our Westfield pupils took part in an area Cross Country competition. We had over thirty pupils taking part and we had 5 pupils who made it into the top 15 in their races - this was no mean feat as there were between 50 and 100 children running in each race. I came to watch (no running for me!) and was really impressed by the enthusiasm shown by all of our pupils. It was not the best weather either with rain falling steadily and the ground was very muddy – not easy conditions in which to run. Thank you to Mr Woodward and Mr Farrell who organised this for our pupils and were both soaked by the end! PARENT GOVERNOR We are looking for another Parent Governor to join our Governing Body. We already have two parents who are school Governors but should have three. This is a really important role in a school as Governors help make decisions about our pupils’ education and how our school is run. If you feel you would be able to attend 6 meetings a year and play an active part in the strategic direction of Westfield Juniors, then please contact me through reception and I can give you more information. SCHOOL COUNCIL BRING AND BUY SALE Yesterday, our very proactive School Council held a Bring and Buy sale in the gym. They made a brilliant £85 in the 20 minutes we have for break-time. Well done to all! VALENTINE’S DISCO Also yesterday, our wonderful PTA organised two Valentine’s Discos – one for lower school and a later one for years 5 and 6. This was a real fun event, organised by volunteers to make sure that our children have fun and a treat. Our children enjoyed the disco. I saw some fabulous dancing; staff as well as pupils... Go Mrs Cheney! 6C ASSEMBLY As well as a Valentine’s Disco, Mrs Chambers’ class assembly was all about LOVE and was brilliant! It was Romeo and Juliet (with a twist)... Don’t say we don’t teach the classics. I hope everyone enjoys the half term break. Best wishes, Margaret Greig
