Dear Parents/Carers,

Adverse weather conditions, otherwise known as snow and ice (we have it every year in winter) hit Hinckley at the weekend. Normally, Westfield schools do not close. This time, however, the snow was deeper than it has been in previous winters and the icy below freezing temperatures did not help as it became very slippery underfoot.

As we have such a large site, it was difficult to clear the pathways and ensure that everyone was safe to walk on gritted paths when they came onto our school grounds.

Thank you for your understanding, as it is not an easy decision to close a school when parents and carers have jobs to go to and need to find childcare should the school be closed. Ultimately, though, I need to think about the safety of not only our pupils, but also you as parents/carers and our staff too (many of whom live outside Hinckley).

The children have been inside this week for two days because the playgrounds were icy and that, together with general Christmas excitement, has kept our staff on their toes. Hopefully, the milder weather will stay and they can go out to play with their friends and let off steam…

Yesterday, our brilliant PTA organised a Christmas stall for children (it was full of very reasonably priced items which would make lovely Christmas presents for their mums, dads, grandparents and other family members).

A free wrapping service was also available. In the evening, a Christmas Bingo session was organised with hot food being served. We had over 100 families attending. Thank you to all our PTA members i.e. parents/carers and staff who were able to support this event. We hope you enjoyed it.

It’s back!! Today we held our first Coffee Stop of the year with the proceeds going to support one of our ex-pupils who had a bad accident just recently. We will be continuing the Coffee Stop in January on alternate Fridays at 2:30 – the first one is on Friday 19th January. We will keep you informed.

Best wishes,
Margaret Greig
