Dear Parents/Carers,

Today was our first Charity Day this year. We all wore our jeans to support the Jeans for Genes charity. It was just like dress down Friday! Jeans are not something our staff wear at work, so it was a treat to wear them. We will count all the 50ps and let you know how much we will donate from Westfield Junior School.

Some of you may have seen the World War 1 Memorial at the front of the school. Mr Greig has been painting cut out soldiers in our garage at home and has worked hard to create a memorial to all the Hinckley soldiers who died fighting in France and Belgium during the Great War. Thank you to both Mr Greig and also Mrs Elwell, who created the willow cross.

The 100 years of the end of that conflict will be remembered on the 11th November 2018 across the UK. Westfield Junior School pupils and staff will be holding a Remembrance Day service on Friday 9th November at 11am. This coincides with the end of a three-week short topic about WW1 where the children will create artwork and poetry. We also hope to create a lasting memorial in the garden using small pebbles in the shape of a poppy.

Our next Charity Day is September 28th – next Friday where we will be donating half of the proceeds from our first Coffee Stop to the Macmillan Cancer Charity. Please come along to the gym from 2:30 onwards and either buy a coffee/tea and cake to eat whilst waiting for your child or buy cakes to take home for the weekend. All cakes are 50p each.

Class assemblies are already underway - Mrs Western’s Class Assembly is next week (28th September) followed by Mrs McKenzie’s class on 0ctober 5th. Hopefully, you have all received a copy of the Autumn term newsletter from Mrs Cheney, which has all the assembly and Coffee Stop dates.

Best wishes,

Margaret Greig
