Dear Parents/Carers, YEAR FIVE NATIVITY This week year five pupils and staff have been busy performing their Christmas Production which, in true Westfield fashion, was not only fabulous but quirky and full of fun! Mrs McKenzie and her brilliant year five team have worked their magic, yet again, and we have seen brilliant all singing all dancing performances this week (they have performed ‘How Christmas Came to Be’ five times) and were completely exhausted by the end of it all. Our pupils are fantastic! I would like to thank the following staff: Mrs McKenzie (director); Mrs Western (photographs); Miss Randall (backstage); Mrs Castle, Mrs Worthington, Mrs Waller, Miss Stynes, Mrs Ansell front of house or backstage support. In addition, Mrs Osborne who is musical director and Mrs Elwell who made the costumes, have both been brilliant and we would not have had the spectacular show that we had without their skills. Thank you also to Miss Billings in the office for admin support. The Westfield team is amazing!! CHRISTMAS PARTIES Next week, we are having year group parties: years five and six on Tuesday afternoon; years three and four plus IH on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully, teachers have written to you with details of these parties. Please check your child’s bag! COFFEE STOP Today, we have our last Coffee Stop of 2018 so this is your last chance to buy some of our yummy cakes – only 50p each. Why not buy some for the weekend or join us for coffee and cake in the gym? CHRISTMAS RAFFLE This will be drawn on Friday 21st December. You should have had tickets already but there are still a few left… Mrs Elwell’s raffles are always well worth a ticket! All proceeds go back into the PTA funds so that we can buy extra things for our pupils. GOODIES’ TREAT This term the children who have not had detention will have a chance to see their teachers showing off performing the Teachers’ Panto on Friday. This will include an ice lolly as a treat. ST JOHN’S CHURCH On Friday 21st December in the morning, the whole school will be attending a Christmas Service at St John’s Church. We will be walking there and back so make sure your child has a coat.   Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, This week has been very busy at Westfield Junior School. As well as our pupils working hard and completing end of term tests this week, they have had Christmas Dinner (there were around 350 pupils being fed yesterday) and the lower school pupils had a Christmas Disco on Wednesday which was organised by the PTA. 5 STARS!! We have brilliant staff in our kitchen who work hard to feed our pupils every day – we still only charge £2 for meals and the catering staff also produce all the cakes and biscuits for the Coffee Stop on alternate Fridays. This week we had our annual visit from Environmental Health and received five stars for the cleanliness and organisation of the kitchen. This is the highest category, so we are well chuffed – thank you so much to Mrs Catterell, Mrs Read, Mrs Capener and Mrs Burrows who work so hard doing the job but also Mrs Holt who manages the kitchen and school dinners very successfully. YEAR 3 AND 4 DISCO On Wednesday, over 100 children descended on the hall for a Christmas disco which was fantastic! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and there were lots of sparkly clothes and great dancing. Some of our year six girls agreed to dance on the stage to teach some moves so thank you to them. Also, thanks go to Mrs Wright, Mrs Elwell, Mrs Halliday, Mrs Cheney and Mr Jones who made this possible. A special thank you goes to Mrs Lewis who ran the whole event from the stage and was fabulous!! It was great to see all our year 3 and 4 teachers who came to support the event and were very helpful in recognising parents which really speeded up the collection of children! CHOIR IN THE COMMUNITY Our lovely choir were out and about today at Armada Court singing to the residents and will be singing tomorrow at the Hinckley Library. We are also booked to sing at the Co-op on Monday 17th December. It is always so uplifting to hear our children singing Mrs Osborne’s creative take on Christmas songs in Santa hats. It is a sure sign that Christmas is near! Next week we have the year five Nativity – you should have had tickets already – and it is Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 14th December. Best wishes, Mrs M Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, DANCE PERFORMANCES Yesterday five classes performed their dance to the school and to their parents in the hall. For the first time, I was not able to watch the performances but had managed to see them in rehearsal. 5MK and 6C’s dances were based on their Time Traveller topic with 3S and 4R’s dances being about 1066. Both very different and fabulous. It is important that our pupils have the opportunity to learn new skills at school and we offer a range of different activities, so they can do so. We are so lucky to have such a brilliant dance teacher, Erika, who creates some amazing dance routines. All pupils have one term of dance every year. YEAR 3 & 4 CHRISTMAS DISCO Next week on Wednesday 5th December, the PTA is organising an after-school Christmas disco for our year three and four pupils. Children who are going to this will bring their disco clothes to school and get changed at the end of the day. The disco will finish at 4:45. Please be prompt to collect your child/children. Years 5 and 6 will have a Valentines’ Day disco in the spring term. SCHOOL CHOIR Our wonderful school choir is performing in the community twice next week and then again in the last week of term. Mrs Osborne and Mrs Lewis organise the choir and they have been practising Christmas songs for a few months now – I have heard them rehearsing and the songs, as usual, are fun and enjoyable. The choir will be singing at Armada Court on Friday 7th December, Hinckley Library on Saturday 8th December and then at the Co-op on Trent Road on Monday 17th December at 11:30. Mrs Osborne is fabulous with our choir and we are always well received wherever we go. A lot of hard work goes into the rehearsals and the organisation of taking pupils out of school. As well as the choir, Mrs Osborne is rehearsing the year 5 Nativity – she is a very busy teacher and all her hard work is much appreciated. Today is Coffee Stop. Please join us for refreshments and cake in the gym – if you cannot stay then you can buy cakes to take away for the weekend. Best wishes, Margaret Greig

Dear Parents/Carers, WESTFIELD JUNIOR SCHOOL SUCCESS!! Our school has, for the second year running, won Primary School of the Year. This is the first time any school has won twice in succession, so this is a brilliant achievement! I would like to thank Mr Farrell and Mr Woodward for all their planning, organisation and excellent opportunities for our pupils to take part in sporting activities. Also, Mrs Adams, who leads the Sports’ Council element of the PE Team – all three staff members attended the Awards Evening last night, where representatives from over thirty schools in the Hinckley, Bosworth, Earl Shilton, Barwell, Desford, Stoke Golding, Groby, Leicester Forest East and Ratby areas heard why Westfield Junior School was voted Primary School of the Year. We are just brilliant – that’s why!! YEAR 3 PLAYLIST PERFORMANCE Our Year Three pupils took part in a showcase engagement activity for their topic this half term which is music based and is called ‘Playlist’. The children were entertained by Mrs Sweet (Harry and Kira’s mum) who has a fabulous voice and sang a variety of songs including my very favourite ever, ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen (which she did brilliantly) and thank you so much to Mrs Sweet for doing this for us! This was also an opportunity for our Year Three pupils to show what they could do: Erin Cook (3F) tap danced; Aayan Dhungel (3S) played his guitar; Aston Boyes (3F) and Macey Moore (3S) played the recorder; Mia Clark (3A) read poetry – what a talented bunch – we have already been talent spotting for the Westfield’s Got Talent Show in March! YEAR 6 PARENTS PGL MEETING On Tuesday after school we are holding a short meeting for the parents/carers of pupils in Year Six who are going to PGL in June. Mr Lambert has been to check out the facilities and risk assess other activities off-site. If you would like to know more about this, please come to the hall after school. FLU VACCINES This is a reminder about the flu vaccine on Monday 26th November. Your child will be having the vaccine only if you have completed the form and sent it back. Best wishes, Margaret Greig PS. It’s been really cold this week and we are still having children coming to school without a coat – could you please make sure they wear one in the morning. Then it’s their decision to leave it in the cloakroom at break and lunch times!!
