Year 3 Summer Term
Let’s discover a fantastical world of mythical creatures and heroes!
This term, we’ll learn about Apollo and the other gods who reign from Mount Olympus and create a 3-D head of our favourite god or goddess. We’ll explore the land of Greece, where the sun scorches the wings of Icarus and Helen of Troy inspires the launch of a thousand ships. In PE, we’ll take part in athletics and practise synchronised battle movements just like the ancient Greeks. Using historical source materials, we’ll research daily life in ancient Greece. We’ll write diaries as Daedalus or Icarus and learn about epic battles. In D&T, we’ll design wings, just like Daedalus, and make Trojan horses. We’ll read Theseus and the Minotaur and create amazing labyrinths, using positional language to guide others around the maze. On maps of Greece, we’ll plot the journeys made by ancient Greek characters.
Help your child prepare for their project
Greece is a fascinating country that has a long and colourful history. Why not sample some delicious Greek food such as baklava or tzatziki? You could also research ancient Greek pots and sketch the intricate images painted on them. Alternatively, have fun taking part in a back garden Olympics, seeing who can run the fastest or throw a ball the furthest!
In English, we will be using our knowledge of the Ancient Greeks to write a range of different genres. These include character profiles, instructions to build a Trojan Horse, diaries and myths and legends.
Our current class text is ‘Beast Keeper’ by Lucy Coats, from the ‘Beasts of Olympus’ series. We will also be reading ‘Greek Myths’ later in the term.
In Maths, we are learning more about Fractions this term. We will also be learning about Time, Shape and Measure.
Our Science topic for the first half of the term is ‘Light and Shadow,’ followed by a topic where we will learn about famous scientists.
PE will continue to be taught on Mondays by our Sports Coaches. Children are expected to come to school in their PE uniform.
In PSHE, our topics are ‘It’s My Body’ and ‘Be Yourself,’ where we will be learning about how to keep our minds and bodies healthy.
In Computing, we are using Book Creator to learn all about Rainforests.
MyMaths homework will be set every Monday and children will have a week to complete this. Children each have their own MyMaths login.
Children also have a login to practise their times tables on Times Table Rockstars.
We suggest that children read at home with an adult at least 3 times a week. We would like them to bring in their reading record every Friday to be checked and house points will be awarded for every read that is dated and signed by an adult. If your child would like to change their book, then they will need to bring it in on a Friday as we will only be able to change them once a week due to COVID restrictions.
Throughout the year, the children have been learning the Year 3/4 spellings. These are attached for you to practise at home.
